How to Paint a Feature Wall

As always, our first step is to get the room ready for paint. Move any furniture out of the room, or if that is not possible move it away from the feature wall you want to paint. Next, lay a Seriously Good Cotton Rich Dust Sheet and tape it in position to prevent slips.

Use some Seriously Good UV Tape to protect the ceiling, the skirting boards and any areas of detail, like door frames or light switches. Then repair any holes or cracks in the plaster work. We have a few great guides to help you fill a hole and fix a crack, so be sure to check those out if you need to. Finally, use a Seriously Good Microfibre Cloth and some sugar soap to clean the wall. You don’t need to clean the whole wall, just areas which might have been touched a lot, such as around plug sockets or light switches.

Before you can get onto the fun stuff make sure you have a nice even base coat. If you have already been painting the room and this is the last step then move onto Step 3, otherwise we recommend watching our guide on how to paint a wall.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with having a nice plain feature wall with a single strong colour, but we’re assuming you want to do something a little more interesting. So, use some Seriously Good UV Tape and start to make shapes with the tape on the wall. Triangles look great, but you can be creative, there is loads of inspiration on our social media pages and in our tip exchange so take a look at those.

If you are using different colour we recommend using an Premier No-Loss Brush to quickly cover the area, or a Taskmaster 4 inch Mini Roller if you have space. These products will give you a great finish and let you work much faster than other similar products. Choose the one that fits the size of your shapes best.

Build the layers up one at a time letting each dry first. Depending on the colours chosen and the quality of the paint used you could need multiple layers.
